For many people from the USA, it is relatively easy to obtain German citizenship and thus an EU passport. You do not have to give up your US citizenship to do this; following a change in the law in Germany in 2024, dual citizenship will be possible in most cases.

There are special simplifications for

• US citizens, maybe of Jewish faith, who are children, grandchildren of Nazi persecutes,
• Descendants of former Germans who lost their German citizenship during the Nazi era – this applies to all subsequent generations, including grandchildren and great-grandchildren,
• children of Germans who did not acquire German citizenship for legal reasons,
• people who previously had a German passport.
